Abstract

Tidal Tongues is a performance and workshop by Maj Horn (DK) and Sarah Blissett (UK) made site-specific for the Getterön nature reserve in Varberg, Sweden.

This participatory performance along the shoreline explores seaweed stories as ways to rethink our connection to vital marine ecosystems. The project aims to highlight the important role that seaweeds play in the ocean ecosystem during this time of climate crisis, while also taking participants on a creative journey into underwater worlds through poetic reflections and performative rituals.

Tidal Tongues begins with a performance lecture by Blissett and Horn about the connections between humans and seaweeds, and the many species that rely on them for food and shelter. This is followed by a workshop in which participants are invited to think and create together. Finally, we cook together using Egg Wrack, Sugar Kelp and Bladderwrack, and enjoy a communal seaweed feast.
