Abstract
Remote and rural, the parish of the Lyn Valley located in Exmoor National Park is distinctive in its situation between sea, rural farmland, and moorland. The coastal towns of Lynton and Lynmouth are representative of communities across North Devon and Cornwall whose staggering natural resources often serve to highlight a disparity that is defined by social and economic impoverishment, cultural ossification, and community isolation. Our project frames this disparity as an issue of spiritual deprivation and explores the intersection of landscape, heritage, community, and memory.
Method.
1) we recorded memories and stories within oral history workshops with school children and adults in the Lyn Valley using illustration and typography to capture personal histories with a focus on ‘thin spaces’ (the blurring of physical and spiritual worlds)
2) We Visualised the memories and stories in the form of an illustrated book.
3) We returned the Stories to the community.
