Abstract

The emergence of big data opportunities should contribute to enhance the role of knowledge management (KM) in the contemporary organisations. Business intelligence (BI) and analytics are important in dealing with the magnitude and impact of data driven issues and solutions using new information, knowledge and patterns revealed through the application of (big) data mining. This paper reflects from the knowledge management perspective on big data analytics implemented mainly using cloud computing services. It also briefly discusses the impact of big data for knowledge management discipline, existing approaches and frameworks. KM approaches should better support big data applications for the exploration and (re)using of new information and knowledge to enhance BI and decision making directed to competitive advantage. The paper provides an overview of the efforts and challenges of exploring big data, particularly deployed in the cloud. The opportunities and challenges provided by cloud computing enabling the development of big data mining applications or analytics are analysed from the perspective of knowledge management discipline with effects to decision making support systems.
