    Abstract

This paper determines the extent of illegally tipping waste in the UK and considers the impacts on the environment and the financial implications for private landowners. Policies and legislative drivers are investigated to establish the penalties incurred when incidents of illegally tipping waste arise. A pond supporting a rare species of mud snail (Omphiscola glabra) located at Brentor, Devon, is discussed as a case study; in order to show the effects that ‘fly tipping’ can have on fragile ecosystems. Methods of deterrence are suggested and it is decided that a ‘one size fits all’ approach to tackling the issue is not a viable option.
