Abstract
Nano silica particles, having very small particle size and very high surface area, affect both fresh and hardened state properties of Portland cement mortars and concretes. Nano silica particles in Portland cement composites exhibit Pozzolanic reaction as well as accelerates the hydration reaction of cement due to creating available sites for the cement hydration products. On the other hand, addition of polymers in latex or emulsion form in mortar or concrete improve flexural strength, crack control and also durability properties. However, polymer addition may cause a delay in the hydration reaction, hence in the setting times. In this study the hydration reaction of polymer-nano silica-Portland cement composites were investigated by using a semi-adiabatic calorimeter. The nano silica and polymer contents as well as nano silica particle size were taken as variable parameters in the study.
