Abstract
The next Olympic Games are to be held in Sydney, Australia, in the year 2000. In examining the extensive preparations now being made, this article provides a case study of the way in which planning for 'hallmark' events can produce significant urban changes and new development. The Sydney Games are of particular interest because, for the first time, Olympic planning is taking on an environmental dimension. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has signalled a strong concern for the environment and a desire to apply concepts such as sustainable urban development. However, the extent to which Sydney Olympics are, in practice, likely to live up to these 'green' aspirations remains a matter of dispute.
