Abstract
Some of the strategic issues within the European Union (EU) from December 2008 to February 2009 are presented. The strategic developments include voluntary agreement on the safe storage of mercury, civil protection Mechanism activated in Moldova, and commission proposals for global pact on climate change. The legal actions include nature protection, wastewater treatment in Greece and Italy air pollution, industrial permits including legal action against 10 Member States, and nature protection warnings to Spain and Portugal. The commission states that the Kyoto Protocol's Clean Development Mechanism should be reformed by being gradually replaced by a sectoral crediting mechanism. Warning letter is sent to Italy after information revealed that a considerable number of towns and cities did not comply to the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive.
