Abstract
The Marine Strategy Directive (Directive 2008/56) aims to ensure that Europe's seas achieve good environmental status by 2020. The directive requires Member States to draw up coordinated strategies to protect and restore Europe's marine ecosystems and also to ensure the ecological sustainability of activities linked to the marine environment. The Commission has asked Romania to address the inadequate nature protection in Sulina in the Danube delta, one of Europe's most important wetland areas. The Commission has concerns about shortcomings in procedures to assess the potential impact of tourism development in the area and has found deficiencies in the environmental impact study. River Basin Management Plans give a comprehensive overview of the main issues for each river basin district and should include the specific measures needed to achieve set environmental quality objectives.
