Abstract
The European Union and the Republic of Congo signed a Forest Law Enforcement Governance and Trade (FLEGT) Voluntary Partnership Agreement (VPA) on May 17. The agreement will enter into force once ratified by both sides and after approval of the European Parliament. The Republic of Congo is the second country to sign the agreement after Ghana in 2009. The European Environment Agency and the European Commission have announced two new tools in the fight to combat biodiversity loss. The panel produces evidence to show that prosperity and humanity's environmental impact grow in tandem, contrary to the popular belief that greater wealth leads to a lighter environmental footprint. The Commission is taking action against Ireland for its failure to comply with an ECJ ruling on the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Directive. The Commission is referring Italy and Spain to the Court following breaches of the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive.
