Abstract

The three-dimensional spreading of a thin viscous fluid layer over a horizontal surface is examined allowing for the gravitational force and surface tension. Using an asymptotic expansion based on two small parameters (Fronda number and the relation of the layer thickness to its characteristic length) nonlinear equations that derive the evolution of a free surface are derived. The analytical results are compared with experimental data.
