    Abstract

This chapter advocates for a revisioning of the potential for sail training to promote positive learning and societal outcomes beyond the typical narrow focus on ‘personal and social development’ (PSD). It acknowledges this as a crucial dimension but seeks to also direct closer attention to the actual environmental context of sail training, namely the marine environment and specific maritime places and attributes. In particular, it seeks to additionally foreground the importance of bodily and sensory engagement with the marine environment (response-ability) alongside the development of appropriate knowledge and ethical commitment (responsibility), together playfully expressed by the notion of response-ability.
