Abstract
The enthusiastic adoption and use of new technologies by young people can leave significantly exposed to a range of associated risks. This article briefly outlines the variety of issues that may face younger users in online contexts, before proceeding to consider the findings from a research study that aimed to assess and improve upon their awareness and current practices. This research was conducted amongst students at eight secondary schools in the South West of the UK, and involved the establishment of an E-Safety Ambassador scheme that aimed to foster a peer-led approach to awareness raising. The findings demonstrated a tangible success in engaging with young people and enabling them to promote good practice to each other. The work also revealed the challenges and constraints facing the teachers, who many might otherwise regard as the expected champions of e-safety awareness in the classroom.
