Abstract
Determination of the causes and mechanisms of cracking usually involves fractography. As the appearance of service failures may be quite different from those given as 'textbook examples' of the same fracture mechanism, the services of a fracture expert are usually required during failure analysis. This paper uses a case study approach to demonstrate the type of information that insurance personnel can expect to obtain from such an expert in assessing the merits of an insurance claim. The case studies indicate that an interdisciplinary background is necessary for a failure analysis practitioner.
