Queerness and climate activism: using illustration to construct playful spaces

Research output: Contribution to conferenceAbstract

Abstract

The climate crisis is an urgent concern, but LGBT+, and especially Bi+ identities are often left out of the conversation, have limited access to resources, and risk feeling excluded from mainstream activist groups. Within this context, how can illustration, as a process that utilises humour and play, be a useful tool to help queer identifying people, and Bi+ people specifically, explore these concerns to find a hopeful future in which they can be involved in climate action. Importantly a place where they feel visible, safe and empowered to be their full selves. Without this people risk not being able to offer the valuable insights that they have to bring to mainstream discussions of climate action, and enact the socially just climate transition that is being advocated for by institutions such as the International Panel of Climate Change (IPCC).
