Abstract
As we read the chapters in this collection some common themes for Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) emerged. Firstly, it is evident that the qualification levels of the ECEC workforce are something that is much debated globally and a number of countries are struggling with the pay and status of ECEC. In addition we see that there are still tensions over what it means to work in ECEC: is it about the care of young children, or their education, or a combination of these two aspects? Many countries are working towards a model of combining care and education in their service delivery, but when different age groups are considered we can see that education is regarded as more applicable for older children, while care is associated with young children. There are also other commonalities that appear throughout the chapters that raise deeper questions about the ECEC workforce.
