Abstract

Through an unfolding documentary narrative, the film explores the specific global landscape of the Arctic that plays part in a fragile ecological system. Through the portrayal of the Arctic winter landscape that appears inhospitable, we are presented by human intervention through endeavors of mining, transport and global seed storage. ‘Prosperous Mountain’ was filmed at The Svalbard Global Seed Vault, Norway.

The film's originality lies in the format of the cinematography and editing by exploring moving image which resonates with still documentary photographic images as ‘vistas’ of landscapes.

Global plant diversity is rapidly declining; climate change and political conflicts threaten the presence of international seed banks. Numerous countries collect and store seeds for securing the world’s future supply of food crop seeds. The Svalbard Global Seed Vault has been constructed in the Arctic to store duplicates of seeds. The Seed Vault in only opened once or twice per year, in order to store new deliveries of seeds.
