Pain control in first trimester surgical abortion

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

The research question was to compare the effect of different methods of pharmacological and nonpharmacological pain control administered prior to or during first trimester surgical abortion (<14 weeks gestation, electric or manual suction aspiration) on patient perceived pain, satisfaction, side effects, and safety. Pain control methods for first trimester surgical abortion such as local anaesthesia, IV sedation, general anaesthesia and non-pharmacological methods were found to decrease pain during and after the procedure. They were also found to be safe and satisfactory to patients, however caution is required as many of these results are based on single studies. © 2010 Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
