Abstract
An original electronic file (22) is processed with a biometric feature vector file corresponding to an individual to produce a series of digital imprint files stored in storage (20). A given digital imprint file represents locations within the original electronic file each of which corresponds to a respective portion of the biometric feature vector file. A given electronic file, which may be the original file or a modified version of it, is processed with each of the digital imprint files to generate a respective reconstructed biometric feature vector file. The reconstructed biometric feature vector files are compared to biometric feature vector files in storage (18) to associate the individual with the given electronic file. The method allows a given electronic file to be linked to the individual with a greater certainty than is possible by the use of fake objects, watermarks or digital signatures, even if the given electronic file has been created by substantial modification of the original electronic file.
