Management of temporomandibular joint ankylosis: a long-term comparative study

Abstract

This study on the surgical management of temporomandibular joint ankylosis was carried out over a period of 14 years. A total number of 96 patients (123 joints) are included in this study. This paper describes a comparison of various surgical treatment modalities of TMJ ankylosis including gap arthroplasty, interpositional arthroplasty and costochondral graft arthroplasty. On the whole silastic arthroplasty provided the most promising results. Costochondral arthroplasty yielded good results in children of growing age group. Gap arthroplasty was found to be suitable for a select group of adult patients.
