Abstract
In this paper I discuss the role of Inductive Machine Learning (IML) in systems intended to aid musical invention. I focus on the modelling of a particular aspect of human intelligence which is believed to play an important role in musical creativity: the Generalisation of Perceptual Attributes (GPA). I introduce the basic concepts and functioning of a particular IML algorithm in the context of a case study sound synthesis system: ARTIST. I conclude with suggestions for further work.
