Is small a big problem for fish?

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

The increase in the exploitation of nanotechnology may have unintended consequences on the environment. NERC has studied such possible effects, suing single walled carbon nanotubes and titanium dioxide nanoparticles and its effects on fish. Experiments showed that carbon nanotubes caused respiratory irritation, with metal particles binding to the protective mucus on the gill. On the other hand, titanium dioxide had a different effect on trout. Brain injury was less of a concern. However, the true question of how these nanoparticles affect the environment still remains and needs more research and attention.
