Abstract

A game designer should be familiar with the timeline of game evolution to understand how the industry and gaming culture have been shaped. They should also have a solid understanding of various other product characteristics: they need to know how to distinguish game genres, types of fun, age ratings, and aspects that relate, separate, or connect the real world with the virtual world. In general, the designer is responsible for the game's dynamics and its specific characteristics; for this, this knowledge is essential. This book aims to present fundamental techniques for game design. Among the topics covered, the theory of Schell's elementary tetrad and its lenses, the MDA theory, concepts related to game dynamics and aesthetics, conducting playtests, and types of game prototypes stand out. Equipped with this knowledge, a professional in the field will be qualified to produce their own games.
