Abstract

A comparison was made between wave reflection and beach groundwater behaviour on a composite-type mixed beach and a sand beach, in order to assess the influence of sediment composition on cross-shore morphodynamic response. Swell wave reflection from the sand/shingle section of the mixed beach was higher than from a sand beach, due to the steeper beach gradient. Wind wave reflection was unaffected by the gradient increase. The hydraulic conductivity of the sand content was the controlling factor for beach groundwater fluctuations. The main impact of the shingle fraction on the mixed beach was via a steeper beach gradient, with subsequent influence on wave reflection, rather than through energy dissipation through infiltration.
