Abstract
The external examining system is ubiquitous across higher education and will remain important for the foreseeable future. It behoves DClinPsy programmes to work with this system to harness its benefits and minimize drawbacks. Despite its cost and potential weaknesses, the system can assist in assuring professional and academic standards, promoting sound practice and facilitating learning. But this requires that external examiners are clear about their roles and responsibilities, properly organised into teams and prepared and supported to appreciate the complex and sensitive nature of the judgments they are make.
