Abstract

Presents wave induced in-line and transverse r.m.s. harmonic force coefficients obtained experimentally from a small diameter flexibly mounted vertical cylinder. In the first series of tests, harmonic in-line and transverse r.m.s. force coefficients were obtained as functions of the r.m.s. local Keulegan-Carpenter number. At values of r.m.s. local Kc less than 10, the force coefficients were scattered, depending on the ratio (wave frequency)/(natural frequency of cylinder in still water). In the second series of tests harmonic force coefficients were obtained when frequency ratio was varied, with fine tuning, for a constant surface Keulegan-Carpenter number. Identifies the position of the peaks, noting the additional maxima due to interaction between the in-line force and the response. (C.J.U.)
