Doing Doctorates Differently: This thesis doesn't get out much

This poster explores doctoral study through questions of dimensionality, legibility and the difficulty of making unconventional research recognisable within established academic forms. Developed for Doing Doctorates Differently, the work presents the thesis as "a sixteen-dimensional shape" encountering the expectations of "three-dimensional" institutional and philosophical spaces.

Hand-made from torn notes gathered across five years of doctoral study, the poster combines collage, drawing and fragments of doctoral writing to consider how a thesis is shaped by the materials, failures, pressures and excesses through which it emerges. Rather than treating difficulty, strangeness or non-fit as problems to be corrected, the poster asks what becomes possible when doctoral work refuses to flatten itself in order to become legible.

The piece reflects on the labour of building conditions through which thought can be encountered without being reduced to existing forms of recognition. In doing so, it contributes to wider conversations about postqualitative research, doctoral experimentation and the institutional possibilities and limits of doing doctorates differently.
