Developing Intravenous Anaesthesia and Sedation: PhD Thesis awarded at the University of Cambridge

Abstract

This submission under Special Regulations resents a body of work in clinical pharmacology. It addresses research questions relevant to patient care and extends from laboratory work to clinical trials. My work has characterised existing and novel hypnotics and analgesics, explored the practicalities of their deployment and looked for solutions to their shortcomings. All of these investigations were collaborative – with non-clinical scientists, with clinicians and with industry. A small portion of the work involved postgraduate students under my supervision. Two studies were delivered by our research network of anaesthesia trainees of which I am President. A table (List of Published Works) setting out the roles of collaborators explains these in detail.
