Developing Equitable Terminology for Anti-Queer Violence Against Boys and Men in Contexts of 'So-called Honour-Based Abuse': Reframing Honour: Inclusive Language in Addressing SCHBVA Against Queer Boys and Men

Research output: Contribution to conferenceAbstractpeer-review

Abstract

This presentation explores the urgent need for equitable terminology in addressing hate crimes against queer boys and men within communities where 'so-called honour-based violence and abuse' (SCHBVA) is prevalent. Despite increased visibility of LGBTQIA+ rights in global discourse, queer males often remain marginalised in both academic and policy frameworks concerning SCHBVA. Current language tends to obscure the gendered and sexualised dimensions of such violence, erasing queer male experiences and limiting access to culturally competent support. Drawing from interdisciplinary research and survivor narratives, this work critically evaluates how existing terminologies reinforce systemic invisibility, thus perpetuating cycles of harm.
Aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Particularly Gender Equality (Goal -5), Reduced Inequalities (Goal-10), and Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions (Goal-16), this presentation advocates for inclusive, survivor-informed terminology that accurately reflects the lived realities of queer boys and men. By centring equity in language, policy, and support services, the project contributes to dismantling stigma and institutional neglect.
