Abstract
When Ukraine hosted the Eurovision Song Contest in 2017, the interval act featured the electro-folk band ONUKA performing with the National Academic Orchestra of Folk Instruments. The performance begins with a shepherd’s melody played on a recorder. The simple tune is repeated with varying ornamentations and inflections before being taken over by the orchestra. A range of other folk instruments begin playing: the bandura (a large lute with a distinctive round shape), the trembita (an alpine horn), the tsymbaly (a hammered dulcimer), a buhay (a friction drum). Ukraine’s 2021 Eurovision entry (Shum by Go_A) features the same recorder which plays a melody embellished with trills as a riff over thumping electronic beats. The instrument in question is the dentsivka, a Ukrainian recorder.
