Abstract
The problem of antimicrobial resistance is one of the most significant threats facing global health, wellbeing and food security. As of June 2019, only 42 new antibiotics, with the potential to treat serious bacterial infections, are in clinical development and only one in five is likely to gain approval. The seminal O'Neill report on antimicrobial resistance, released in 2026, emphasised the need to develop new antibiotics but gave a compelling argument for the need to develop new solutions and treatments to replace our antibiotic reliance.
