Clearing? Between the three, four, and more-than

Abstract

Moved by the “spiritings” evoked through and by the Adventures in Posthumanism (AiPH) research group, this collaboratively written chapter of enactive and emergent writings exemplifies a “heterogenesis”, in which, through “processes of continuous resingularisation… individuals become both more united and increasingly different”. In the entangled middlings and relationalities of writing, texts pass from one writer to another to another, mapping and energising movements in an immanent exploration of what all bodies, human, nonhuman and more-than-human, can do. Initiating a fugitive call of challenge to the constraining forces of the neurotypical, neoliberal university and a sensing of an imperative to do education differently, the writers draw inspiration from the work of Erin Manning and, in particular, from her AiPH presentation, Out of the Clear.1 Calling on Manning’s concepts of “clearing”, “mediation”, “subjectivity” and others, this chapter works to trouble the neurotypical/colonial logics that continue to haunt and hamper knowledge production in the contemporary neoliberal university. As adventurers in posthumanism, engaging in writing practices “deeply threaten[ing] the power/knowledge that holds the academy in place”, our chapter features our not knowing in advance what each of us will be moved to write, or how each of us might then respond: writing from on, with and to create a “plane of immanence”. Arguing therefore for speculative approaches, taking up the experimental and sympoietic practices the AiPH group encourages, we invite readers to embark on their own collaborative writing adventures.
