Abstract
As the director of the MAGIC Lab, at Goldsmiths University of London, I oversee projects that combine psychological research methods with performance magic.
For instance, we study misdirection and forcing to
learn more about consciousness and free will. We also
seek to apply many of these principles to non-magical
contexts. For example, we are currently exploring ways
of implementing forcing principles in computer
games, and we are even ‘teaching’ artificial agents
magic deception, as part of a project to develop new
cyber security technologies. By mixing magic tricks
with science, we aim to uncover the secrets of the human mind (see Experiencing the Impossible [1]).
