Abstract
Very thin layers of randomly oriented continuous carbon fibre have been produced by Courtaulds Carbon Fibre Unit using an air-knife. The Courtaulds airknife, which is used to produce a thin randomly oriented veil of carbon fibre, has been modified to produce a thin unidirectional ribbon of reinforcement. Several of these ribbons can be combined to produce a finely-mixed tow of hybrid (mixed fibre type) reinforcing fibres. The device has been designated the 'AIRCOMB'.
