Abstract

In fiber reinforced plastics, the orthotropic structure of the material causes the shape of the wavefront to be distorted from the circular form used for acoustic emission source location in metals. The elastic properties of fiber composites vary with the orientation of the loading axis relative to the principal axis of the reinforcement. The velocity of propagation of an acoustic wave is a function of the square root of the elastic modulus relevant to the mode of propagation.
