Abstract
Dynamics of baroclinic tides over the shelf break is studied in the region of the New York Bight from the data obtained in the Joint Russian-American Wave Experiment JUSREX-92 during cruise 7 of R/V Akademik Ioffe and with the use of methods of mathematical modeling. Wave fields were analyzed by both mode and ray approaches. It is shown that, in the vicinity of the zone of generation of a baroclinic tide over the shelf break, perturbations of the pycnocline induced by a barotropic tidal flow present a superposition of some lower baroclinic modes that form a "wave ray." The ray analysis showed that the local high mode perturbations of the pycnocline generated by a tide are related to characteristic lines of the wave equation. An extended zone of intensive diapycnal exchange observed in the experiment in the region of the shelf break may be interpreted from the point of view of the "wave ray" induced by a barotropic tide.
