Professor Richard Davies joined the University of Plymouth as Vice-Chancellor in October 2024, having previously been Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Global and Sustainability at Newcastle University.
An earth scientist who studied at Reading and Edinburgh Universities, Richard started his career in the oil and gas industry, in the UK and abroad.
His research now focuses on climate change, marine methane hydrates – also known as ‘fire-ice’ – and building projects in the area of carbon capture and storage. Richard has been recognised for his work on controversial areas of science and public debate around fracking and the environmental impact of oil and gas.
As Vice-Chancellor he leads a University that is focused on creating the best possible student experience and changing people’s lives for the better in the city of Plymouth and South West region, as well as having a growing international impact through teaching and research.
In 2015, UN member states agreed to 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. This person’s work contributes towards the following SDG(s):
