Dr Naomi Tyrrell is an AI trainer for researchers and evaluators, social research consultant and evaluation specialist. She specialises in helping researchers, academics, evaluators and research professionals use generative AI effectively, responsibly and ethically across research and evaluation workflows.

Naomi designs and delivers AI training for researchers, universities and research organisations, covering AI for literature searching and evidence reviews, research design, qualitative and quantitative analysis, evaluation, academic writing, research communication, and faster research workflows. She has delivered AI training and researcher development for organisations including the University of Plymouth, University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, Imperial College London, the University of Manchester, the University of Nottingham, Cranfield University, the University of Plymouth and the National Centre for Research Methods (NCRM), alongside training for charities and other research and evaluation organisations.

At the University of Plymouth, Naomi is a Visiting Research Fellow and Visiting Specialist in the Doctoral College, contributing expertise in researcher career development, artificial intelligence, using social media for research, and careers beyond academia.

Alongside her work in AI, Naomi is an experienced researcher and evaluation specialist, with expertise in mixed-methods research, theory of change, impact evaluation, participatory research and research methods. Through Research Your Way, she works with universities, charities, public-sector organisations and social-impact organisations on research and evaluation, while also providing specialist training in the use of AI for research and evaluation.

Naomi is also the Founder of Europe’s largest Alt-Ac Careers Network, supporting researchers and academics to build careers beyond traditional academic pathways. She specialises in alternative academic careers (Alt-Ac), leaving academia, researcher career development and PhD careers beyond academia, and has developed training, resources and career-development programmes for researchers considering their next steps.

Her academic background is in Human Geography and the Social Sciences. She has published more than 40 academic outputs, including three books, and her research has contributed to REF impact case studies.
