Profile summary
Senior Research Fellow, based in Peninsula Medical School and Peninsula Dental School, working as part of the Centre for Applied Medical Education and Healthcare Workforce Research.
I lead the CAMERa research group's professional regulation research theme.
My research crosses multiple disciplines including health policy, health services research, and clinical education. I am a qualitative social scientist, and I design, lead and collaborate across a range of study types including qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods studies, and systematic, narrative and realist reviews.
My current and recent research centres on:
- The identification and management of concerns about health professionals' conduct and behaviour, including regulatory fitness to practise procedures and organisational performance management processes.
- The utility and value of regulatory datasets for supporting quality, safety and learning in healthcare.
- Challenges to healthcare professionals' wellbeing.
- Professional migration and the challenges it presents to national regulatory systems.
- Artificial intelligence (AI) and its implications for healthcare professionals and health regulation.
- Medical revalidation and appraisal processes.
- Sociology of professions.
I am Deputy Chair of the Plymouth Internal Ethics Review Committee (PIERC).
