Overview
Profile summary
My research centres on the application of new technologies to the measurement of stress, emotional state and behaviour in animals. This is via thermal imaging, acoustic monitoring and animal-mounted sensors. My goal is to develop tools that will support both real-time welfare assessment on farms and decision-making for the conservation of wild animal populations.
Teaching interests
I am a lecturer in Animal Physiology and Behaviour. My teaching addresses analytical approaches, experimental design and ethics in animal management and conservation.
I am module lead for:
- BIOL133 - Principles of Physiology
- BIOL313 - Animal Ethics & Welfare
- ANIM5008 - Conservation, Ecology & Society (MSc ZCB)
- ANIM5012 - Aquarium Health & Nutrition (MSc ZCB)
I also lead a work placement programme for MSc students in the programmes Zoo & Aquarium Conservation Biology, and Sustainable Aquaculture & Fisheries.
Roles on external bodies
Associate editor - Proceedings of the Royal Society B
Guest editor - Journal of Thermal Biology
University of Plymouth representative - Universities Federation for Animal Welfare (UFAW) LINKS scheme.
