Dr Joseph Lanario is a Research Fellow and Principal Investigator for the severe asthma research programme at the University of Plymouth, which he has led since 2020. Joe's research uses health-related quality of life (HRQoL) data to measure the patient experience of severe asthma and predict response to biologic therapies.

Joe co-authored the Severe Asthma Questionnaire (SAQ), a disease-specific HRQoL measure now included in the Core Outcome Measures Set for Severe Asthma (COMSA), developed by the 3TR consortium. He led its national validation with the UK Severe Asthma Network, and now leads its cross-cultural validation across seven countries through SHARP, a European Respiratory Society Clinical Research Collaboration, chairing meetings across up to 11 country leads.

His qualitative work with severe asthma super-responders to biologic treatment, recognised with a British Thoracic Society/NIHR Early Career Researcher award in 2023, now underpins a 17-country survey study on patient percpetions of biologic response, and its variability across patients. 

Joe has also co-developed the General Symptom Questionnaire and its severe asthma-specific version (GSQ-A), exploring symptom overlap between severe asthma and functional disorders such as fibromyalgia.

 Building on this, he led a feasibility study of Body Reprogramming (BR), a psycho-educational intervention for fibromyalgia, before piloting an adapted version targeting extra-pulmonary symptom burden in severe asthma.

Joe supports the Supported Self-Management programme of research, a collaboration between the Universities of Exeter, Birmingham and Plymouth. He has published 25 papers, secured over £750,000 in research funding, and is committed to patient and public involvement and mentoring early-career researchers. 

Joe is a member of the British Thoracic Society (BTS), and European Respiratory Society (ERS).
