    Profile summary

    Senior Marine Science Technician

Co-Chair University of Plymouth LGBT+ Staff Forum

Within my role as Marine Sciences Technician I perform many and varied duties. I provide technical help and teaching support for field, project and practical lab based work on the MSc Applied Marine Science, MSc Renewable Energies, MSc Hydrography, BSc Environmental Science, MSci (Hons) Ocean Science, BSc (Hons)Ocean Exploration and Surveying , BSc (Hons) Ocean science and marine conservation and BSc (Hons) Oceanography and coastal processes and BSC (Hons) Marine Biology.

My role involves working with the BSc and MSc students teaching them how to use oceanographic equipment, explaining data collection techniques and data interpretation, how to write risk assessments, designing fieldwork activities, discussing the practicalities of fieldwork and equipment use for projects and dissertations as well as on site support in the field. I also have a role advising on PhD research and other research projects in the area of adapting or alternate use of existing equipment and designing fieldwork for data collection.

As part of the Marine Station technical staff I manage the resources for oceanographic fieldwork including equipment, consumables and training of staff and students. In addition to this I work on the University of Plymouth research vessel, Falcon Spirit. I am also a commercially endorsed skipper. This allows me to skipper the other smaller boats in the Plymouth University fleet. My role in this context is to maintain a safe working environment during work at sea and to provide a positive student experience. I am also involved in the development of safe schemes of work for equipment that is used and in the development of risk assessments relating to the equipment and the general day to day tasks performed on the boats.
