Jonas Aryee is a lecturer at Plymouth Business School, where he leads the undergraduate and postgraduate Maritime Economics and International Trade modules. His expertise in the maritime sector is built on his educational background, including a BSc in Ports & Shipping Administration from the Regional Maritime University in Ghana, an MSc in Maritime & Transport Economics from the University of Antwerp in Belgium, and a Ph.D. from Aarhus University in Denmark, focusing on the Politicization of Digital Transformation in the Port of Tema in Ghana.
For the past 17 years, Jonas has focused on teaching and capacity-building within the maritime transport and logistics sector in Africa and Europe. Before joining the University of Plymouth, he served as a lecturer at the Regional Maritime University in Ghana and as an adjunct lecturer at the Nelson Mandela University in South Africa. In addition to his academic roles, he has practical experience in the industry, having worked in a shipping line and contributed to policy-making at the national level in Ghana. He has been involved in EU-funded projects, including work as a Transport Economist on selected portions of the Trans-Ecowas Highway in Liberia.
Driven by a passion for enabling intelligent decision-making in government and business, Jonas approaches issues in the transport and international trade sectors from a systems perspective, emphasizing their holistic nature. His research interests revolve around socio-technical issues in ports and trade facilitation, port governance and cluster development, and maritime policy. He is currently engaged in a research project called Port Effectiveness and Public-Private Cooperation for Competitiveness (PEPP II) with colleagues from Aarhus University, Regional Maritime University, and the University of Ghana. He is exploring port cluster development in ports with single national port authorities.
