    Ian qualified from Oxford University Medical School in 1989 and undertook postgraduate training in general medicine and interventional cardiology on the SW Thames Deanery Rotation (1992-2001) including a research doctorate (MD) in coronary disease progression at St. George’s Hospital Medical School / University of London. He was subsequently awarded a BHF International Fellowship to study advanced coronary intervention including novel revascularisation techniques at Harvard University Medical School / Massachusetts General Hospital (2001-2). Since his appointment as a consultant cardiologist at Plymouth in 2002, Ian has been instrumental in the introduction of primary coronary angioplasty for the treatment of acute myocardial infarction, and trans-cutaneous aortic valve implantation (TAVI) for the treatment of aortic valve disease. He has also had a variety of clinical management roles including appointments as the service line director of the cardiology unit at Plymouth University Hospital, and as clinical director of the Peninsula Regional Cardiac Clinical Network.
    Ian has an active interest in medical ethics and the philosophy of medicine, and took up his current post as Clinical Lead for Ethics & Law in July 2014. He undertook further training on contemporary educational theory through participation in the Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Education (PGCert ClinEd 2018) including contemporary teaching methods, constructive alignment, methods of assessment, giving/receiving feedback, and becoming a critically reflective teacher.
    Ian has planned and delivered a wide variety of teaching sessions to undergraduate and postgraduate medical students including: multiple plenary sessions on introductory ethics including focus on bioethical principles as a coherent transcultural framework for approaching ethical dilemmas; ethics interactive workshops including workshops on Resource Allocation, Defining Mental Capacity and Personal Responsibility in Medicine with a focus on the Situational Judgement Tests. Ian has also developed an ethics and law learning outcomes framework proposal linked to the major bioethical principles for supporting teaching and learning of medical ethics within PUPMS curriculum.
