    Overview

    Profile summary

After completing a BSc in Human Biosciences at the University of Exeter, Emilia Lawrenson pursued her interest in becoming a Paramedic. Initially, she worked in the ambulance control centres for London Ambulance Service (LAS), and then South Western Ambulance Service Trust (SWAST) taking 999 calls and dispatching ambulances. In 2012, Emilia started her Paramedic training in Poole, Dorset. She undertook a degree in Paramedic Science alongside working on frontline emergency ambulances. On completion of her training, Emilia then moved abroad to Vietnam where she lived for a year. Emilia taught English as a foreign language at a university in Hanoi, as well as at a number of secondary schools and in a major teaching hospital. After a period of travel, Emilia returned to the UK and commenced work as a frontline Paramedic for SWAST in Exeter. Soon after, Emilia also gained ad hoc employment with Capital Air Ambulance to undertake global repatriations of critically sick or injured patients in private, purpose-built aircrafts; which she continues to do to this day. She has also recently been headhunted to join the brand new neonatal and paediatric repatriation arm of this company and will be among the first in the UK to deliver this service; working alongside Lucy Air Ambulance. To expand upon this, Emilia has recently undergone level 7 training in the 'retrieval and transfer of the critical care patient within special situations' to optimise her care and management of patients in this setting.

Alongside these roles, Emilia joined the 'Paramedics in Primary Care' programme through Health Education England where she is currently in the final throes of completing a Master's degree in Primary Care. As part of this programme, Emilia is employed at a GP practice in Devon one day a week; managing her own patient lists and working as a Non-Medical Prescriber. Emilia continues to work bank shifts for SWAST as a Paramedic where she maintains her skills and currency in the emergency ambulance sector. In addition to all these, Emilia has pursued her interests in research and has completed an extra-curricular Level 7 project looking at the impact of pre-hospital intra-cardiac arrest thrombolysis on survival rates.

Emilia has gained wide-ranging experience from primary care medicine, to emergency medicine, to critical care medicine. She has gained experience in teaching at university level, and has attained valuable research skills. These have all led Emilia to the role she is in today; working as a Lecturer in Paramedic Science at the University of Plymouth. In addition to her teaching role, Emilia has been responsible for the creation and delivery of two brand new and pioneering modules; at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. She is also part of the admissions team for the undergraduate Paramedic Science programme. Furthermore, Emilia works as an External Examiner at another UK-based university; helping to ensure consistency of grading across institutions in Paramedic-related degree programmes.
