Eleanor Pinkney

I am a PhD researcher here at the University of Plymouth, where I use the common European hermit crab as a model to investigate the effects of human-induced rapid environmental change (HIREC) on animal personality, with a focus on multi-stressor interactions. My current research is looking at the effects of microplastics, artificial light at night (ALAN) and temperature on risk coping behaviour.

I have been a member of the Chester Zoo Youth Board since 2024 and am the co-chair of the Conservation Education & Engagement working group. I work with the trustees and executive team to shape the zoo's approach to working with young adults, and to represent the voice of young people in conservation. I am also a member of the Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour (ASAB) Student Subcommittee.

Prior to starting my PhD, I complete an MSci Biological Sciences degree at the University of Birmingham. I produced a thesis examining visitor effects on African wild dogs at West Midlands Safari Park. I graduated in 2025 with the Head of School's Award for the highest marks on my degree pathway.
