Accepting PhD Students

    Overview

    Profile summary

I moved into teaching following 10 years as a postdoctoral researcher, having spent time in Florida and Plymouth. I am still very much involved in research, along with the supervision of PhD students, as well as teaching. As part of my teaching role, I am the Stage One Lead for the Environmental and Chemistry undergraduate programmes and module lead for GEES1302 (Soils, water, Climate) and GEES2301 (Environmental Field & Research Skills).

    Professional memberships

    • Challenger Society
    • American Geophysical Union (AGU)
    • American Society of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO)

    Roles on external bodies

I am a member of the GEOTRACES Data Management Committee (https://www.geotraces.org/data-management/)

    Teaching interests

My teaching interests cover Environmental and Analytical Chemistry with a focus on inorganic water chemistry, in both the freshwater and marine environment. These feed into the following modules/areas:

    • Soils, Water, Cliamte (GEES1302; Stage 1, BSc Environmental Science / BSc Environmental Management and Sustainability)
    • Environmental Field and Research Skills (GEES2301; Stage 2, BSc Environmental Science / BSc Environmental Management and Sustainability)
    • Fieldwork and dissertations in Environmental Science (GEES3305; Stage 4)
    • Fieldwork and dissertations as part of MSc Environmental Consultancy and MSc Sustainable Environmental Management and MSc Applied Marine Science (within the School of Biological & Marines Sciences),

    Additional information

    Research focus
My main focus is understanding the distributions and cycling of bio-essential trace metals, such as iron, cobalt and zinc, in the marine environment.
Trace metal biogeochemistry: I am interested in the distribution of trace elements (particularly elements that are essential for the growth and sustenance of marine life) in the ocean, both in the dissolved phase and from oceanic particulate material.
Analytical chemistry: I am very interested in developing and using analytical techniques which allow for the determination of multiple elements from one sample.
