    Overview

    Profile summary

I moved into teaching following 10 years as a postdoctoral researcher, having spent time in Florida and Plymouth. I am still very much involved in research, along with the supervision of PhD students, as well as teaching. As part of my teaching role, I am the Programme Lead for the two undergraduate environmental programmes, BSc Environmental Science and BSc Environmental Management and Sustainability and module lead for ENVS1002 (The Physical Environment).

    Professional memberships

    • Challenger Society
    • American Geophysical Union (AGU)
    • American Society of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO)

    Roles on external bodies

I am a member of the GEOTRACES Data Management Committee (https://www.geotraces.org/data-management/)

    Supervised research degrees

Anlong Wang (2024 - current). Smart nutrient sensor networks using miniaturised optical and electrochemical detection

Tess Ashen (2022 - current). Developing novel optical-chemical measurements of iron.

Isobel Turnbull (2019 - 2022). Investigating the bioavailability of iron to marine microbes.

Antony Birchill (2013 – 2017). Cycling of iron in the Celtic Sea.

    Teaching interests

My teaching interests cover Environmental and Analytical Chemistry with a focus on inorganic water chemistry, in both the freshwater and marine environment. These feed into the following modules/areas:

    • The Physical Environment (ENVS1002; Stage 1, BSc Environmental Science / BSc Environmental Management and Sustainability)
    • Sustainability Science (ENVS1009; Stage 1, BSc Environmental Science / BSc Environmental Management and Sustainability)
    • Field and Research Skills / Environmental Data Management (ENV*2002; Stage 2, BSc Environmental Science / BSc Environmental Management and Sustainability)
    • Fieldwork and dissertations in Environmental Science (ENVS3001; Stage 4)
    • Fieldwork and dissertations as part of MSc Environmental Consultancy and MSc Sustainable Environmental Management and MSc Applied Marine Science (within the School of Biological & Marines Sciences),
