Dr Adam Streeter

    Overview

    Profile summary

Research Fellow in the Medical Statistics group at the Peninsula Medical School.

Chief Investigator on the STOPFlu project: Statin Treatment OPtions during vaccination against inFluenza: an observational study of the interaction between statins and influenza vaccination.

I have a background in clinical trials and observational studies, with a special interest in utilising health records and registry data for research. While clinical trials remain the gold standard for evidence, patient health records can provide valuable insight into drug safety, advancing future therapies and ensuring existing therapies deliver optimal benefit to the patient. They may also help to make clinical trials more efficient, potentially reducing the number of patients needed for recruitment to, often costly, clinical trials.

The STOPFlu study, which I am leading in collaboration with colleagues at Exeter University, is one such study based on health registry data, from the Clinical Practice Research Datalink. The health records have been pseudonymised (i.e. records stripped of any identifiable information and assigned a non-identifiable number), and linkage provided between primary care and hospital records. Current research suggests statins and the flu vaccine may have health benefits beyond their intended purpose. The study will look at the interaction between statins and the flu vaccine, and how the benefits from both therapies can be maximised.

I am also working with the Cure Parkinson’s Disease Trust and colleagues on a novel, drug-repurposing study for treating Parkinson’s disease.

I also contribute statistical support to the ENRICH oncology trial of drug ibrutinib against Mantle-cell lymphoma and have supported the ongoing RAW (resection after Whipple) study, as well as the recently concluded TARS, quit-smoking study and e-CoachER, exercise-referral study.

Past research projects include the Health Lifestyles Programme (HeLP – cluster RCT in schools) and the EarlyBird cohort study.

I supervise two statistical PhD projects, one researching compositional data analysis and one researching Bayesian cluster-RCTs, and two MD projects (RAW study).

    Professional memberships

Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy

    Roles on external bodies

I am currently a Biostatistician at the Universitätsklinikum Münster, Germany. I retain a funded contract with the University of Plymouth for leading the STOPFlu project.

    Teaching interests

I teach the Evidence-Based Medicine module to Bachelor of Medicine / Bachelor of Surgery undergraduates. I have also designed and created innovative on-line vidcasts, for which I have co-led the development of a simulation programme to illustrate the statistics of diagnostic studies.

I am also a tutor for postgraduate research students, providing statistical support for their dissertation projects in the Faculty of Health.
