General overview of Research themes

Research in SoGEES covers an interdisciplinary spectrum, spanning the Earth sciences and physical geography, materials science and chemistry, ecology, environmental science and society.

Our researchers lead and foster collaboration to drive these fields forward, supported by advanced knowledge and technical skill in field techniques, remote sensing, geospatial and social data analysis, sensor development, and state-of-the-art laboratory analytical techniques.

We investigate themes across space and time. These include studying a wide range of issues, from Earth’s history, including palaeoclimates, quaternary environments, tectonics and mid-ocean ridge processes; to the modern challenges of energy and Net Zero solutions, sustainable transport, geopolitics and security, geohazards, catchment science, land and marine observations and management. Critically, this research connects to our work on environmental governance and social-spatial processes, which seeks to understand and develop more inclusive and sustainable ways of living.

Our priority is to maintain and grow the vibrant, supportive and inclusive research environment in SoGEES via regular research centre meetings and engaging with the University of Plymouth’s Strategic Research Institutes, external speakers and other relevant parties. We support social events, ECR groups, mentoring and coaching to underpin grant application and other and research-related writing.
