The Neurodegeneration Research Group at the University of Plymouth is dedicated to understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms that drive neurodegenerative disease. The group investigates a broad range of conditions including multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), frontotemporal dementia (FTD), Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Our research focuses on uncovering the fundamental biological processes underlying neuronal damage, degeneration, and repair, with particular interest in how cellular dysfunction contributes to disease progression. By studying mechanisms such as neuroinflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, protein aggregation, and neuronal resilience, we aim to identify new therapeutic targets and strategies for intervention.

Through interdisciplinary collaboration and translational research, the group seeks to bridge basic science and clinical application, improving our understanding of disease pathology while supporting the development of innovative treatments for patients affected by neurodegenerative disorders.
